Asset Protection Device Success Story - UniversityInstallation Facts: Number of wireless alarm receivers on campus: 35 Type of wireless used: Interlogix ITI Number of Asset Protection Devicesâ: 20 Types of Assets Protected: personal computers, oscilloscopes, Unix workstations, classroom projection systems, and test and measurement equipment Background: The need for the campus to secure valuable equipment 24 hours a day was due to re-occurring thefts. The university initially started with PCs, Workstations, and Oscilloscopes and has recently added Asset Protection Devices to high-end video conferencing projectors. APDs have now become the standard for protecting valuable equipment 24 hours a day and are specified in all new construction. Implementation: Because of its flexibility, hybrid wireless/hardwired security systems are used throughout the campus. These systems initially provided intrusion protection. Because of re-occurring theft of PC components and other high dollar items, they are now used to provide Asset Protection as well, maximizing the initial investment in their security systems. The security systems are armed during off-hours to provide perimeter and motion intrusion detection. During normal business hours, the systems are disarmed. The Asset Protection Devices (APDs), however, are configured to be on all of the time so maximum protection of selected assets is achieved. This is an ideal protection strategy for organizations that are "open" most of the time, like universities, hospitals, and manufacturing facilities. The security systems report to a on-campus monitoring facility and on-site campus security officers are dispatched in the event of an alarm. Any central station could monitor these systems, but this university chooses to do its own monitoring. Asset Protection Devices are taken off-line for asset servicing purposes using the security system's main keypad. As of this publication date no theft or vandalism has occurred on assets protected by Asset Protection Devices. |
